Mattimeo's Forest Bedroom

As we have been preparing Link's nursery, I realized I never took the time to share Mattimeo's forest room. But first I want to share a little bit about where we got the idea for the themes for the rooms in our house. When Robbie and I were on our honeymoon in Acadia National Park six years ago, we were hiking up in the alpine zone admiring all the different shades of lichen and the overall beauty that surrounded us. We thought how wonderful it would be to have a room in our house one day that was all the colors of the mountain top. Then we thought, why not have each room of our house be it's own ecosystem, as a way to celebrate this beautiful earth. So we decided when we got a house, we would make each room into it's own ecosystem. We began by making Meo's room into a temperate deciduous forest like we have here in Maine. You may recall that in the apartment we lived in when Meo was first born had a forest themed nursery (http://ouvrezvosyeuxjdr.blogspot.com/2011/07/nursery.html). At our new house, we have a lot more space and freedom so we were able to create a more Montessori style toddler room. Here are some photos as the room is now:

Meo's toddler sized bed on the ground, with a white pine I painted on the wall. The color of his room is "guacamole" and we used a paint with zero VOCs to make it as chemical free as possible. The print of the turtle on the wall was made by Meo's Auntie Jess. The mobile is the one he had over his crib (it has forest creatures), that I tied to the ceiling by installing a hook.

This is Meo's baby boy that sleeps near him. We got the baby as a big brother gift when we found out I was pregnant again.

He has a forest animal bed set and valance. The curtain is a thermal curtain that prevents drafts and a lot of light from entering the room while he sleeps.

He has books out on the shelves so that he has easy access to them whenever he wants. He takes advantage of this often! The stand of birch trees are ones that I painted.

This is the start of his little puppet collection. He gets a kick out of the little stories we tell with puppets, and sometimes will even pretend with them himself.

This is his little reading a play nook. The raccoon is a pastel drawing by his Auntie Sam, the alphabet print was a Christmas gift from his Auntie Jess, and the photographs are ones that I had taken. They are all mounted at Meo's eye level so that he can enjoy them.

The giant sugar maple tree around the sky light was a collaboration painting done by me and my sister Sam.

Meo's train table of course was designed around the world in the book Mattimeo, which takes place in the Mossflower woods. 

Another book case where he has a tidy place to keep toys and books. He loves his animal hammock where all his stuffed animals (most of them are from Robbie and my childhood) hang out.

A lot of his toys are forest themed, including the discovery tubes I made for him, and the cute little tree stump with animal finger puppets he got from his Auntie Sam.

He has a forest themed lamp and an owl humidifier to continue the theme.

Fore a long time he had this long mirror alongside his bed. He loved looking at himself and playing in it. Unfortunatley, he went through a phase where he thought it was funny to kick it and bang things on it, and as it is not shatterproof we had to take it down to keep him safe.

Meo loves his forest room!
