Link's 2 month check-up

Happy after his check-up

Link had his 2 month check-up and is wonderfully healthy. He is progressing developmentally superbly and growing like a champ. He very sweetly "cooed" and "gooed" at the doctor as she looked him over. Here are this months stats:

Weight: 12 pounds 12.5 ounces (67th percentile)
Height: 23 inches (55th percentile)
Head Circumference (75th percentile)

I was curious what his big brother, Meo's stats were like at this age, so I looked them up (blog post about Meo's 2 month check-up):

Weight: 13.6 pounds (90th percentile)
Height: 23.25 inches (75th percentile)

The interesting thing to me is that Link shot up from the 23rd percentile to the 55th percentile for height...quite a growth spurt! Seems like he is catching up to his brother even though Meo had two weeks longer in the womb. It will be interesting to see their similarities and differences as they grow.

Poor Link also had his first vaccinations, protecting him from no less than EIGHT diseases:
  • dipthereia
  • tetanus
  • pertussis (whooping cough)
  • Haemophilus influenzae tyep b
  • hepattis B
  • polio
  • rotavirus
  • pneumococcal disease
This came in the form of one oral vaccine and 3 shots. Link did not like any of them, but was immediately comforted by mama milk. He reacted very well to the vaccines and was only slightly fussy that evening (putting him in the ERGO baby carrier soothed him though) and had a slight fever that went away before bed.

12 Month Check-Up

Wednesday, the day after Meo's first birthday, we had his 12-month check-up. It was in the afternoon, and because I like to bring Meo right home after his vaccinations, Robbie came with us and worked his second half of day home. Robbie hadn't been to the doctor's with us since his very first appointment, so it was nice for him to be able to be there with us. They had fun playing in the waiting room.

Meo was a wild thing during his appointment. What a huge difference three months has made! Instead of calmly hanging out in my arms as we explored the exam room together, he was a monkey fighting with all his strength to get down and adventure. Eventually I gave in and let him do his thing while the pediatrician asked us questions. He got a hold of the crinkly exam paper at one point and at another point was pushing/surfing with the wheely table the doctor was sitting at. Busy, busy boy.

Everything went really well; the doctor said he looks and feels very healthy. She laughed at Meo's craziness; apparently her 13 month old is doing the same sorts of things. I think Meo found it very interesting to be examined because he sat still and was very cooperative for the actual exam. Here are his measurements for his 12-month appointment:

Weight: 22 lbs 9.5 oz (70th percentile)
Height: 30 inches (57th percentile)
Head Circumference: (95th percentile!)

This time Meo had 3 vaccinations. One was for pneumonia. The other two (chickenpox and MMR) were his first exposure to live (but weakened) viruses. I think this time the vaccinations were worse than ever before. He screamed so loud, both Robbie and I almost cried. I held him close and rocked him, but there wasn't much I could do to help until all three were over. The nurse was fast, thankfully, and right after she was done I nursed Meo and he immediately calmed down. Within five minutes he was back to his silly, playful self and was back to crawling around having a grand ol' time. Cheers to the powers of breastfeeding!

And cheers to a healthy, happy one year old!

6 Month Check-Up

Sweet Meo had his 6 month check-up and vaccinations this afternoon and he did really well. He had big smiles for the doctor and nurses and had a lot to chatter about throughout his appointment. Everything looks good, he is a big strong boy. She was impressed with his ability to sit-up unsupported, said that his oral development (ability to chew and manipulate food in his mouth) is advanced for his age, and joked about how he looks too big to be a 6 month old. Here are his stats for this month:
Length: 27 inches (75th percentile)
Weight: 18 pounds 1.4 ounces (75th percentile)
Head Circumference: 18 inches (90th percentile)
He had an oral vaccine first today which he actually managed to swallow and keep down this time (last time a lot of it oozed out of his mouth). Then he had a shot in each thigh. We have opted to go with the recommended vaccination schedule plus he had a flu shot. I wasn't so sure about giving him a flu shot, but the doctor thought it would be a really good idea since he is exposed to other babies at playgroups and classes and since Robbie and I haven't had our flu shots. If a baby gets the flu, it can be pretty serious, and it didn't seem worth the risk. However, I did feel like a bit of a hypocrite making Meo have a flu shot and being too wimpy to get one myself. He took it like a champ though. Well, he cried at the top of his lungs after each shot, but she did them in quick succession. He was sitting on my lap and after she was done, I quickly scooped him up into my arms and he immediately stopped crying. It was amazing. It is such an incredible feeling to know that he trusts me so much and is that he is so comforted by me that he is able to feel that level of comfort so quickly. I am incredibly touched. I nursed him before we left just because I thought he might like that, and then we headed out on our hour long journey home (Thanks to his Grandma (Jeannine) for driving us to his appointment and back! What a huge help!). He didn't fuss at all and napped the whole car ride. In fact, we have been home for 45 minutes and he is still napping in his car seat. I am looking forward to snuggling in bed with him after dinner and starting my new book, A Dance with Dragons.

Four Months Old!

Sleeping on his way home from the pediatrician's office
Mattimeo turned four months old today! I can't believe how fast time flies by; before you know it he will be eating solid foods and crawling around! His appointment went really well. We were able to check off all the boxes on the developmental checklist and the doctor called him a developmental super star! He also had more vaccinations which I was really nervous about. This time I held him while the nurse stuck him and he didn't scream nearly as loud. He calmed down more quickly too, and I nursed him right away before putting him in his car seat. He fell asleep right when we got in the car, which was awesome and slept the whole way home. When we got home he woke up after a bit and wanted to nurse and go back to sleep. After about an hour of napping, he was up and smiling. He has been playing in his play gym, listening to mommy sing songs and play the penny whistle, sitting up to read books, and laughing hysterically at mommy's silliness. So it seems like he is feeling great so far; he's doing so much better than he did after his two month shots. I am so relieved!

4 Month Stats:
Height: 25.5 inches (70th percentile)
Weight: 16 pounds 8 ounces (70th percentile)
Head: 90th percentile! (when he was born his head was in the 30th percentile; his brain must be growing!)

2 Month Check-Up

Mattimeo and I just got back from his 2-month check-up and I am very proud of him. He did a great job at the doctor's office, full of smiles and "coos". His stats for this month are:
  • 13.6 pounds (90th percentile)
  • 23.25 inches (75th percentile)
The doctor was very pleased with his progress. I had only a couple concerns this month. First, for a few days around 3-4 weeks old and again now at 8 weeks old he has had spells of being fussy at my breast. He will drink for a little while then pull off screaming and my milk will spray into his mouth. I talked to moms and the teacher about this at the Birth Roots newborn class I went to yesterday, and they seem to think that it is probably because I have an oversupply of milk. I figured that's what was going on last time this happened and found that if I nursed him so he was at a higher level than my breasts, it seemed to make things easier, and eventually I didn't need to do that anymore because my milk went to a more appropriate level. Now it is happening again and I've noticed that both of these instances occurred right after growth spurt periods, so I think I may have an oversupply temporarily from trying to produce enough milk to sustain his growth spurt and then it just takes a few days to calm down to a lower level. The doctor thinks I am probably right and not to worry about it. As suggested, I have started feeding him twice on the same breast before moving on to the next one until things calm down a bit for him. My second concern was that on occasion his spit up will contain some curdled milk (milk that has already been digested) and I wanted to make sure he wasn't suffering from reflux. The doctor said that this was fine though since he doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain when he burps or spits up. In fact, sometimes he is smiling at me while he spits up...perhaps he thinks its funny (smile).

During his visit he had to have two sets of injections (combinations of Polio, Hib, DTaP, and PCV) and one oral vaccination (Rotavirus). At first, he didn't care for the oral vaccination, but after a little while he discovered it was sweet and then he seemed to be enjoying it. Then he had the dreaded injections. The first one made him scream. Then she moved onto the next leg and she said that this one had a little more bite to it. I'm not sure I have ever heard him scream so loud; he stopped breathing for a decent length of time. My poor baby! I am not sure who was more sad, him or me. I felt so bad for him! I hate needles so much, and I know how much it must hurt. I felt so bad letting them do that to him, knowing that he must feel like I am allowing this kind of pain happen to him. I had to keep telling him and myself that these vaccinations are to prevent him from getting really sick, and the pain is only momentary. After he had his shots, I hugged him close and walked him around the room telling him I love him and that I was sorry but that it needed to be done to keep him healthy. My poor little guy was crying real tears, he sounded genuinely sad rather than upset. We are going to spend the rest of the evening snuggled together in his nursery.

One final thing to note about his appointment is that she detected a heart murmur. She said that since he is growing wonderfully and seems very healthy, that the heart murmur is probably nothing to worry about. She said it is very common in babies and small children to go through periods of time when they have heart murmurs. To be safe though and find out what is causing the murmur, he will be going to have an echo-cardiogram sometime soon. I know I shouldn't be worried, but it's hard not to. I pray that my little boy doesn't have any heart problems. Here is some information I found about heart murmurs in babies from the babycenter website:

What does it mean if my baby has a "normal heart murmur"?

It doesn't mean your baby has a weak heart or any other health problems. As your baby's blood moves through the chambers, valves, and major vessels of his heart, it can make a faint noise. That sound is called a heart murmur.

Depending on what kind of murmur it is, the noise may be vibratory or rumbling, humming, swishing, gurgling, or even musical. (It's a separate sound from the familiar "lub dub" of the heartbeat.) Most of the time, this noise is diagnosed as an "innocent," "functional," "normal," or "harmless" heart murmur. And almost all children have one at some time or another.

In some cases, the noise is caused by blood flowing faster or in greater amounts than usual through the heart and vessels. That can happen when your baby has a fever, for example, or if he's anemic or has an overactive thyroid. Other times, it's the result of something structural that doesn't affect the functioning of your baby's heart — in which case the sound may fade as his body develops and his chest wall thickens.

Innocent childhood heart murmurs usually go away on their own, although some people have them their whole lives. These murmurs require no treatment.

How will the doctor evaluate my baby's heart murmur?

To assess whether a murmur is normal or needs looking into, a doctor will check a baby's pulse and blood pressure and listen carefully to his heart with a stethoscope. For clues, she'll try to determine where in the heart the murmur is occurring, when in the heartbeat cycle it happens, what type of noise it is, how loud it is, and whether it changes when the baby changes position.

If your baby's doctor has diagnosed the murmur as normal, you can rest assured it's nothing to worry about. If she's not certain about it or is concerned, she'll refer you to a pediatric cardiologist, who might order tests such as a chest X-ray, ultrasound (which uses sound waves to scan and create an image of the heart), or an electrocardiogram (which records the electrical activity of the heart).

What if my baby's heart murmur isn't "normal"?

A diagnosis of "abnormal," "organic," or "not-innocent" murmur means a baby's heart may have a structural irregularity that warrants medical attention. It might be something that didn't develop normally before birth, such as a narrow or leaking valve, a narrow artery, or even a hole in the heart.

If a problem is found, treatment may include medication to control the heart's rhythm or surgery to correct a structural defect. Many structural defects are minor and don't need treatment, since they don't affect the heart's functioning.
On a brighter note...one of the fun things about going to Meo's appointments is checking off his list of developmental milestones. One of the things he is supposed to start doing this month is to push up with his arms when he's on his stomach. Well this week, he started doing just that! I am so proud and happy! He seems to enjoy tummy time more now that he can push himself up too, which is a fabulous bonus. He's such a strong boy!

First week Mattimeo can push himself up with his arms (8 weeks)

One Month Check-Up

Smiley little guy

Our little creature had his one month pediatrician appointment this weekend. It was just him and I this time, and I was a little nervous about getting there on time and keeping him from crying while we were there, but he did such a great job! His appointment went really well; he is in perfect health. He weighed 11 pounds and 13 ounces (he was 9 pounds at birth) and he was 22.5 inches long (he was 21.5 inches at birth). He's such a big boy! The doctor said that he is in the 90th percentile for both height and weight. Hopefully he will be tall-ish like his daddy!

He had to have his second Hepititis B vaccination at that appointment, and I didn't think it would be so hard for me to see him get stuck with a needle! I was holding him as they stuck him in the thigh, and I felt so bad! I felt as though I was betraying his trust somehow; I am supposed to be his safe place, not the place he gets poked at! Yet at the same time, I didn't want him to feel alone and scared while he was getting stuck either. He did really well though and there wasn't any need for me to be so worried. He cried a little as they pushed the actual vaccination in, but didn't really mind the needle pinching him. But as soon as they were done I was able to calm him immediately and he was fine. He got to have a sweet Bugs Bunny band-aid.

The doctor said that Mattimeo was really alert for his age, which I thought was really cool. He is been surpassing all his developmental milestones too. Currently he is able to look at people in the eye for long periods of time and will smile and "talk" to them. His smile is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, and he has the cutest little voice. Right now he says "goo" a lot, and Robbie and I enjoy mimicking him in attempt to have a conversation. I think Mattimeo gets a kick out of this and often rewards our efforts with a big grin. He's such a sweet little boy!

Taking a nap after his one month pediatrician appointment

We've had a great weekend so far, and have randomly gotten to see lots of relatives. Jess, Robbie's sister, decided to make a spontaneous trip to Portland, and came to visit us for the afternoon/evening after Mattimeo's appointment. This was great because she hasn't been able to come up from Boston since she saw him in the hospital. Mattimeo was great with her and rewarded her for visiting by smiling and happily cooing at her while she held him. He was so adorable! Robbie's parents came to visit too and we all had dinner together. Mattimeo was more fussy than usual that afternoon due to his vaccinations, so he went back and forth between being really happy and smiley to crying and wanting to take a nap with Mommy. He slept really well that night.

On Saturday, Robbie and I had to go to Saco to bring our car in for an oil change, so we decided to visit my mom. While we were there, my brother Brian and his family decided to come for a visit. Like Jess, they hadn't seen Mattimeo since he was in the hospital, so we were really excited they came. Mattimeo's cousin, Bryce, is 10 months old now and has gotten so big! He is such a cute boy and it was fun to watch him try to interact with Mattimeo. I think it's really great that Mattimeo has a cousin who is the same age as him; I hope they will have lots of fun together in the future!

Bryce is the center of attention :)
