My little Meo had his very first soccer season this fall at age 4. It was only four practices long, but I think that was long enough for this age group. At first he was a little bit scared, and not really participating. I hung out on the field with him trying to help him feel comfortable and have fun, while also testing moments to see if it would be okay to retreat to the sidelines. About halfway through the first practice we got to that point.
Little Link kept us busy during soccer practice as he ran around every which way like a mad man, of course.
Although Meo grew comfortable enough to not need a support group that first practice...he still didn't always participate. For instance, he decided he did not want to be wet from the grass like the other kids so he remained standing during a drill (as pictured below). In later practices he participated more fully though.
They didn't have their shirts the first practice because someone stole all of them from the shed they were stored in. They got them second practice though...and they were quite huge as you can see.
Meo started playing and having fun and doing a pretty good job by the end of the season. Sometimes he would space out during scrimmages. Sometimes he would take us yelling "keep the ball out of the goal" too seriously and cry when he didn't make contact with the ball. But all in all he had fun, made progress, and learned some new things.
The little scrimmages were definitely the cutest part of practice. Only a handful really new what they were doing, but boy did they try their hardest!
We were all very proud of him when he got his participation certificate at the end of the season. I don't feel like he's very passionate about soccer, like he is about other things, as of yet. But he he a fun time, tried something new, learned some new skills, and got to meet some people in our little town.
